Sexual Education During The Late 1900 S - 1428 Words
Human nature has shaped and developed many different social norms in our society, however, they also create many social problems when conflicting views come under scrutinization. Sexual education in America has been problematic since the late 1900ââ¬â¢s because there is simply a lack of it. Sexual education has transformed over a hundred years, abated by the effect of religious upbringings and conservative outlooks. However, as evolved as it is today, it is still a national issue because of the ongoing struggle of comprehensive sexual education against abstinence, and in the midst of the two, students are still not being exposed to proper sexual health. A movie was created in the early part of the war, Fit to Fight (retitled to Fit to Win after the war) where the 5 characters in the movie went off to war and 3 of them had sex with prostitutes and the ones who has touched the prostitutes all have various degrees of consequences (Lord). Furthermore, the U.S. was not prepared for sexual education to the masses, and the government struggled between trying to educate our soldiers of venereal diseases while successfully not crossing the lines of ââ¬Å"moral valuesâ⬠(Lord). When the 1920s arrived, sex ed became a proponent of promoting family life. It evangelized the pre-marital chastity. Sexual fulfillment is frowned upon and sex continues to be viewed as a method of procreation. However, sex ed classes were held in biology classes, thus allowing the students a more clinical setting to study about their sexual health rather than being preached at in class for their ââ¬Å"moral conducts.â⬠There also appeared to be an inclusion of sociological examples within the lessons against abstinences. Lucy S Curtiss, an English teacher from Connecticut composed an implementation of sex ed through her paper, ââ¬Å"Sex Instructions through English Literatureâ⬠, in 1923. She refers to sex as a ââ¬Å"social evilâ⬠and counter-argued that sex needs to be explicitly
